History

Linear shower drains have been manufactured for many years. Until recently they were used mostly for commercial and industrial applications. In recent years, however, linear shower drains have been finding their way into our homes, providing a sleek alternative to circular center drains for shower drainage.

Linear shower drains are stylish and provide a simple way to create accessible, curbless showers. A linear shower drain only requires a single sloping plane.  This makes for easier navigation when in the shower.  This single slope direction also provides a more stable surface for a wheelchair user than the conical shaped slope which is required by traditional center-drains.

Style

Most people today still choose linear shower drains because they provide the foundation for creating a stylish shower.  They offer a clean, elegant look for both curbed and curbless showers. The flat plane of the shower floor allows the installation of large-format tiles, which expands design possibilities even further. Also, linear drains can be made practically invisible through the use of a tile-top strainer in place of a conventional metal grate or strainer. In this configuration, drain water seems to vanish as it exits through the open grout joints surrounding the drain. Linear Drains offer an almost endless shower design options.

Installation Showerline Linear Drain System for a curbless shower – Wood Subfloor

One of the most common remodel projects is converting a 60 inch bathtub into a shower.

You can create either a curbless or curbed linear drain shower.  However, the layout and material differ.

Curbless Linear Showers typically have the drain body at the entrance or the back wall of the shower.

When the drain body is placed at the entrance, floor system modification typically is not required.

CURBED LINEAR DRAIN SYSTEMS typically have drains that are located on either the RIGHT or LEFT side of the shower.

The drain body is layed into the “frame” of the sloping panels.
